Recently, the compact superconducting cyclotron developed by Hefei CAS Ion Medical and Technical Devices Co., Ltd. (HFCIM) successfully generated a 200MeV proton beam, which signifies the successful development of the homemade most compact superconducting cyclotron, breaking the monopoly on high-energy level medical superconducting cyclotron.
In comparison to similar devices internationally, its superconducting magnet has a maximum current density of 140A/mm2, which is three times higher than similar devices worldwide. The static electric field reaches a maximum of 170kV/cm, an international peak. The accelerator achieves a maximum magnetic field strength of 3.0T, with a 25% reduction in diameter to only 2.2m, a 50% weight reduction, and a total weight not exceeding 50 tons. The superconducting isochronous cyclotron demonstrates significant advantages in terms of smaller size, lighter weight, lower energy consumption, higher precision, and faster energy switching.
Proton therapy is an advanced international method for treating tumors. Leveraging the innovative platform of Hefei Comprehensive National Science Center, Hefei Superconducting Proton Therapy System project was initiated in 2016. Over the past four years, HFCIM worked tirelessly, overcoming challenges to successfully develop key subsystems, including the 360° full-circle lightweight rotating gantry, large-field cone-beam CT image-guided system, pencil beam scanning treatment head, and high-speed proton modulation treatment implementation system.
At present, HFCIM is conducting beam commission to accelerate the construction of a domestically-produced compact superconducting proton therapy system.
